Long before tractors and quad bikes arrived, Welsh Cobs and Welsh Mountain Ponies were the powerhouses of Welsh hill farms. Strong, intelligent and sure-footed, they carried feed, gathered sheep and tackled steep mountain slopes where machinery could not go.
That tradition continues on our family farm today, giving guests at Henbont Holidays a glimpse into a living part of Welsh rural heritage.
🐴 Horses Through the Generations
In the 1930s, Dilys - a young girl living at Henbont - usually walked the two miles to school. On lucky days, when her father had time, she would ride there on horseback, a small memory that brings Henbont’s horse‑powered past vividly to life.
Long before tractors arrived, heavy horses such as Shires and Clydesdales were the tractors of their day, taking on demanding work like ploughing. But Welsh Cobs and Welsh Mountain Ponies played their part too: strong, intelligent and sure‑footed, they carried feed, gathered sheep and tackled steep slopes where machinery could not go. On smaller hill farms, their agility made them invaluable for lighter ploughing, harrowing and everyday fieldwork - and with a quick brush and polished harness, a hardworking Cob could transform into a smart trap horse ready for chapel or market.
Will Henbont, born in 1919, was a renowned horseman who spent much of his life working the land with horses. He often spoke about the realities of horse‑powered farming, including one memorable moment when he tried to save time by fastening the rope of the horses pulling the chain harrow to his belt while he was ploughing. The horses lifted their heads - and lifted Will clean off the ground with them. Many years later, in his nineties, he watched tractors baling and wrapping hay and reflected, “Never could we have dreamed of machines like this when I was a boy.”
Dilys also remembered travelling with her mother by pony and trap over the Black Mountain to Brynamman Market, where they sold butter - a demanding journey that reflects the hard work, self‑reliance and independence of rural life at Henbont.
Indispensable to Henbont life, Welsh Cobs and Mountain Ponies gathered livestock on the hills and pulled the trap to chapel or market and are still used on the farm today.
